Mindful Mondays - Dramaturgy and Drama Therapy

Are you being creative?

It's important to have creativity in the arts. No matter what your age. Creative aging is so important. All of us age. It's just a part of life. What's the alternative? Wouldn't we like to age instead of not age? As we get older, it's important to keep creativity going. Whether it's drama, film, music, art, writing, drawing...there's so many options to consider for our health.

One form of creativity in theatre (actually a couple) is Drama Therapy and Dramaturgy.

This is something very few people know about. In fact, dramaturgy has been around for hundreds of years. Very few people in theatre use is. A dramaturg is the philosopher in the room. Theatre has a philosophy to it. To have a researcher and a resource for people is a wonderful thing. Research this!

Drama therapy is important too. Many people use the arts as a form of therapy. Theatre is very therapeutic. Think about it. We all act. All of us act differently depending on who we're around. With that being the case, why doesn't more people use the arts as a form of therapy? There is such a thing as Drama Therapy. Viola Spolin, the Mother of improvisation, believed everyone could act. She went to prisons and did improv classes with the prisoners to help them with drama. It would be wonderful if everyone could understand the value of the arts, and how it can be used as therapy. Think about theatre games, which Spolin created over 50 years ago. We play games to bring the child out in us. Think of the word play. What does it mean? It means to have fun. We do theatre and plays to have fun. It's playtime. It brings out the child in us. That's why we do it.

Dramaturgy and Drama Therapy are very important tools for the public to know about. These can be used as basic forms of communication.
