January 2026 Philosopher: Epictetus

What are you doing today to help change the world?

Theatre and the arts are so important. In fact, drama therapy and creative arts therapy helps the individual and the public so much. Drama is therapeutic. It's a proven fact from over the last several years. In fact, Viola Spolin, founder of improvisation and theatre games, used drama as a form of therapy when she went to prisons to help the convicts. The arts helps us both mentally and physically in more ways than the average person knows.

That being said, let's shift to our January philosopher: Epictetus!

For those of you who don't know, Epictetus was a Greek philosopher, and helped with Stoicism more than you can imagine. He was born into slavery in Turkey, and lived in Greece his whole life until he was banished. Epictetus was smarter than people gave him credit for. He was ahead of his time.

He studied under Rufus, a future philosopher of the month here at the Senior Theatre Guild, and took what he learned to teach others about philosophy.

It's important to understand the philosophy and way of thought from Epictetus: his way of thought is that things that happen are beyond our control, and that we are responsible for our own actions. Self-discipline plays a big factor in this way of thought.

He influenced many over thousands of years, and emphasized self-knowledge. Logic was a very important element to him. Logic and truth.

Some great quotes by Epictetus:

"Some things are beyond our control and others not".

"Freedom is the only worthy goal in life".

"It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters".

"First say to yourself, what you would be; then do what you have to do".

He was a great man. Epictetus believed that we should not worry about things beyond our control and try to be the best we can be for the world while we're here.

That can be related to so much. Use these principles to be creative.
